Sample Veterinary Technician/Assistant Training & Inprocessing Schedule

Initial the line next to each task as you accomplish it.  Your supervisor will work with you in accomplishing these tasks.

Phase I--Organizational (1 week)
Expected Completion Date ____________

During your first week on the team, you will be expected to:


[________]Meet all other staff members

Complete these required forms:
[________]Personnel information
[________]Form I-9
[________]Form W-4
[________]Radiation badge request

[________]Become familiar with the location of all hospital work areas

[________]Learn how to complete time cards and the location of the time clock

[________]Learn where bulletin boards and work schedules are posted

[________]Review the Hospital Safety Manual

[________]Become familiar with the location of supplies

[________]Become familiar with the uniform code

[________]Become familiar with the organizational structure of the hospital

[________]Learn the hospital schedule for meals and breaks

[________]Learn payday procedures and overtime policy

[________]Receive your personal copy of the Staff Policy manual

[________]Learn the medical records filing & configuration system

[________]Adhere to client information & confidentiality rules

[________]Read the hospital housekeeping manual and be able to perform the tasks assigned to your position

Phase II--Introduction (2 weeks)

During your second and third weeks on the team, you will be expected to:


[________]Properly answer the telephone or greet clients when the receptionist is unable to

[________]Learn the hospital's common medical abbreviations

[________]Learn basic medical terminology

[________]Properly clean and disinfect cages and runs

[________]Prepare meals for hospitalized patients and boarders

[________]Properly sanitize food and water pans

[________]Learn the medical waste disposal procedures

[________]Begin recording patients' appetite, excretion, etc.

[________]Learn how to obtain stool samples

[________]Learn how to obtain/record patients' vital signs

[________]Learn how to prepare samples for in-house lab testing

[________]Learn how to prepare samples for reference lab testing

[________]Restrain animals correctly for all procedures

[________]Learn how to remove a frightened animal from cage/run

[________]Learn how to applying a hasty muzzle

[________]Learn the proper use and care of clippers, blades, etc.

[________]Learn how to prepare and label medications for dispensing

Learn the necessary recordkeeping requirements for:
[________]dispensing/administering controlled substances
[________]admitting patients for hospitalization/boarding/daycare
[________]performing veterinarian directed treatments

Phase III--Basic Nursing Skills (3 weeks)

During your fourth through sixth weeks on the team, you will be expected to:

[________]Learn to identify and locate commonly used medications

[________]Properly prepare and read fecals & heartworm tests

[________]Prepare the correct vaccines for patients

[________]Prepare fluids, IV dripset and catheter for use

[________]Properly flush IV catheters and change IV bags

[________]Learn to properly add medication to IV drips

[________]Properly prepare medications for IV, SQ & IM administration

[________]Learn to properly prepare patients for surgery

[________]Learn to properly prepare the operatory for use

Learn to properly prepare & sterilize surgical packs
[________]instrument packs

[________]Learn to properly administer IM, SQ & IV injections

Learn how to properly collect hematology samples for:
[________]Heartworm filter/antigen tests
[________]CBC w/differential
[________]Serum chemistry panel

[________]Learn how to properly perform ECG

Learn the hospital's recommendations for clients regarding:   
[________]estrous and breeding cycles of dogs and cats
[________]proper nutrition for dogs and cats
[________]parasite screening and prevention
[________]heartworm disease transmission, testing and prevention
[________]flea control on pets and in the house & yard
[________]surgical neutering of dogs and cats
[________]vaccination protocol for dogs and cats

[________]Learn the techniques for intubation of patients

[________]Learn how to identify the stages and planes of anesthesia

[________]Begin monitoring of anesthetized patients

[________]Begin performing radiographic procedures

[________]Begin performing in-house laboratory procedures
