TrainingBefore anyone is allowed to take radiographs (or be exposed to radiation) they must be trained on the physical or health hazards associated with radiation. They must know, understand and follow the hospital's policies for the proper operation of equipment. They must also be informed of their rights and responsibilities under the OSHA Radiation Standard and the state radiation protection program. Even if the staff member has previous experience in radiographic operations, they must be trained on the practice specifics. There are many very useful tools to help in properly training staff members to safely produce quality radiographs. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) has a quality DVD-based training program called Be Safe! It covers all the safety issues in a veterinary hospital, including radiology operations. Although the tape is primarily for a small animal hospital, mixed and large animal practices will also benefit from the information even with the small animal "slant." Universities, community colleges and private companies also offer x-ray training and safety courses that can be very beneficial to veterinary practice staff members.
